The South China Sea and the Spratly Islands remain a contentious part of the world; however, it is unusual to read newspaper articles, or to see stories of the region on the evening news. Only 4,000 miles from the Persian Gulf, this region could be the site of the next major world conflict, but it continues to remains obscure. Five major military and economic powers, China, India, Japan, South Korea and the United States, all have vested interests in the region; not to mention every emerging nation in Southeast Asia and Oceania.
